A Tam o' Shanter (often abbreviated Tam or TOS) is a Scottish style hat, originally worn by men, but women have adopted a form of this hat known as a Tam or a Tammy. The hat is named after a character in a poem written by Robert Burns in 1790.
Originally, the hat was made only in blue due to the lack of chemical dyes ("blue bonnets"). The hats are now available in a wide variety of colors and in traditional tartans. Tam o' Shanters are a casual alternative to the Balmoral and the Glengarry in Highland dress, and are part of the uniforms of a number of military units.
The Tam o' Shanters sold by South Pacific Berets are made by FEZCO in the Czech Republic, one of Europe oldest hat manufacturers (since 1799).
The woolen hood is identical (in shape and manufacturing) to the beret, with an added headband in contrasting colour and, of course, topped off with a tourie (pompom) on top. One size fits all, available in black and blue. $43.50
